ANAS Young scientists are in doctoral studies at the University of Montpellier

For training of PhD students of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) at the international level, Framework Cooperation Agreement and Agreement on Cooperation and Thesis Funding were signed last year between Academician Akif Alizadeh, the President of ANAS and Professor Francois Henn, Vice-President of University of Montpellier (UM). This cooperation opened wide opportunities for PhD students of Azerbaijan, for the first time, to be granted with the double diploma. In accordance with the Agreement, young specialists of the Academy as the PhD students of ANAS and UM are provided with supervisors from both sides. After completion of two-year study at UM and one year – at ANAS, PhD students pass defence procedure of the thesis assessed by the examination board consisting of the scientists of both organizations and get the right to be granted with the PhD diplomas from Azerbaijan and France.

For 2018, the biomedicine was proposed by ANAS as a priority scientific area and a competition was launched on the joint PhD program. Two young specialists of ANAS – Sabina Farhadova from the Institute of Genetic Resources and Fidan Huseynova from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology were selected among applicants of the PhD program on the biomedical topics submitted from UM side. Since beginning of 2018, they have started their doctorate study at UM.

Professor Robert Feil, head of the Laboratory of Genomic Imprinting and Development of the Institute of Molecular Genetics of CNRS and Academician Ahliman Amiraslanov, Academician-Secretary of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS are the supervisors of Sabina Farhadova conducting research on thesis titled “Mouse embryonic stem cells models to explore epigenetic mechanisms involved in human disease”. Professor Veronique-Barragan Montero, leading scientist of the Laboratory of Bioengineering and Nanosciences of UM and Professor Alamdar Mammadov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies of ANAS are the supervisors of the Fidan Huseynova conducting research on thesis titled “Angiogenic activation of Dental Pulp Stem Cells for tissue repair”.

Corresponding Member of ANAS Aminaga Sadigov, head of the Main Department of Science and Education and Dr. Esmira Alirzayeva, head of the Office of International Relations of the Presidium of ANAS visited the UM due to the starting of academic year. They had meetings with F.Huseynova and S.Farkhadova, as well as with their supervisors, and got acquainted with the progress of their study and research. Both supervisors expressed their satisfaction on the indications of skills and education of PhD students, as well as their expectations on the achievement of successful scientific results and on the continuance of cooperation with ANAS.

Besides, A.Sadigov and E.Alirzayeva, Dr. Gulnara Nabibayova, head of the Department of the Institute of Information Technology of ANAS, Dr. Afruz Gurbanova, senior specialist and Yusif Sadiyev, web developer from the same organization also visited the UM to participate in the following meeting of the Nizami project in the framework of Erasmus+ Program – Capacity-Building in the Field of Higher Education. During the meeting, the work done by the Azerbaijani partner organizations and results obtained were discussed. The delegation of ANAS presented the activity implemented by ANAS and discussed the structure and principles of the National Management Portal on doctoral study in Azerbaijan. Taking into account suggestions of both local and foreign partners the structure of Portal was approved and the preparatory work has already started off.

It should be noted that the project is being implemented under the coordination of the University of Montpellier and with the participation of 5 leading European universities, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, ANAS and 9 universities from the Republic of Azerbaijan.
