Report on “Modern carpet of Azerbaijan” delivered

On April 3, at the meeting of ANAS Presidium, chairman of the Board of “Azerkhalcha” OJSC, head of the “Carpet Studies” Sector of ANAS Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, Doctor of History Sciences, Professor Vidadi Muradov delivered a scientific report on “Modern Carpet Studies of Azerbaijan: Achievements and Prospects”.

The speaker recalled that, in order to systematize the research work carried out in the field of studying the development of carpet art in Azerbaijan, the formation of carpet science as an independent, conceptual and fundamental science, the training of specialized personnel in this scientific field, by decree of ANAS Presidium at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography was created “Carpet Studies” Sector. He said tha,t the sector’s activities are carried out in accordance with the State Program for the Protection and Development of Carpet Art in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2018-2022 which approved by the AR Presidential Decree Ilham Aliyev.

The speaker stressed that, the history of national carpet weaving is investigated as one of the important sources in studying the history of Azerbaijan, the carpet art of Azerbaijan is studied on the basis of practical and theoretical materials in the context of such sciences as history, ethnography, economics, art criticism, folklore, ethnobotany, etc., studies are being conducted to establish the place and position of the Azerbaijani carpet weaving in the history of world carpet art, and study the methods of producing and trading carpets in the republic and ways of entering the international market, the process of the emergence and development of national carpet ornaments is explored, forgotten carpet ornaments are identified and restored, etc.

Vidadi Muradov noted that, the Sector conducted joint research with the staff of ANAS Institute of Botany on “History of the dyeing business in Azerbaijan”: “As a result of the field work that was conducted in the country, were collected data on the activities of 55 dyers who lived in the XIX-XX centuries in different regions of Azerbaijan, including in Karabakh, Ganja, Guba, Shirvan, Absheron and their methods of work.

The methods and time of collection, drying, storage and use of dyeing materials, sources typical for the Azerbaijani carpet of white, red, yellow, purple, black, green colors of plant and animal origin were identified. For the 1st time, data were collected and systematized on wild-growing and cultivated dyeing plants in 84 denominations that grow on the territory of our republic. The results of the research are reflected in the monograph “Dyeing,” published in 2017”.

The scientist stressed that, carpets and carpet products woven in the territory of Nakhchivan, which were studied in the Karabakh or Tabriz groups, were studied anew. Taking into account that these carpets have peculiar artistic and technological properties, as well as taking into account the historical and geographical conditions of their creation, they were first included in the scientific classification in an independent form as the Nakhchivan group of Azerbaijani carpets.

Describing also other works performed to study carpet art of Nakhchivan, he said that, by the decision of the Presidium of ANAS, the results of the study were reflected in the monograph “Carpet weaving in Nakhchivan: traditions and modernity”, which was published in Azerbaijani, English, Russian and Arabic in collaboration with academician Isa Habibbeyli.

Vidadi Muradov noted that, as a result of research conducted in the Lankoran-Astara zone, history, ethnography, toponymy, composition of the population, ancient genera, types of traditional economy and crafts, traditions of carpet weaving and other features of the region were studied.

After listening to the report, held discussions. Academicians - Isa Habibbeyli, Irada Huseinova, Rasim Alguliyev, Ahliman Amiraslanov, Vagif Farzaliyev, Vagif Abbasov, Doctor of History Zemfira Hajiyeva, Doctor in Law, Professor Habil Gurbanov, Doctor of Economy, Professor Nazim Imanov and others shared their opinions on the report.

Then, by Presidium was adopted Resolution.The resolution reflected such issues as conducting comprehensive studies in the field of studying the development of carpet art in Azerbaijan, organizing a number of scientific and practical workshops in the Kovrov sector, with the goal of ensuring the participation of relevant scientific institutions and organizations of ANAS in these studies, including The scientific departments of Ganja and Nakhchivan, as well as the Lankaran Regional Scientific Center.
