Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

A scientific conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Baku State University (BSU) and the History department of this university was held at the Institute of History of ANAS.

The conference is organized in accordance with the Order of President Ilham Aliyev "On the 100th anniversary of Baku State University.

The event was opened by the director of the Institute of History academician Yagub Mahmudov, who noted that BSU is the first European-style higher education institution in the Muslim East. The university was founded on September 1, 1919 by the Parliament of the Azerbaijan People Republic (APR) and History department of the university has been operating since that time.

In his speech, Yagub Mahmudov stressed out that, great leader Heydar Aliyev is a world-famous graduate of the Faculty of History of the BSU: “When we were in our first year, his group graduated from the university. At that time, the great leader worked in state security agencies. We all well understood how important this is for each of us.”

At the conference, it was stated that in the late 80s and early 90s, the BSU History Department was one of the centers of the national liberation movement.

When Yagub Mahmudov led the faculty, his Academic Council decided to restore the historical name of the university. Then the question of renaming the university was framed by the decision of Great Academic Council of the university. Since then, BSU has been operating under its historical name.

At the conference, teachers of the Faculty of History Anar Isgandarov, Saida Aligizi, Saida Guliyeva, Sevinj Ruinten and others noted that BSU is a legacy of APR and for 100 years of its activity served the various interests of the Azerbaijani people. The university has trained hundreds of prominent scientists, prominent public figures and intellectuals.

Finally, BSU students and teachers participating in the conference were given the publications of the Institute of History.
