Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

A scientific conference dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the tragedy of January 20 was held in the Nakhchivan Division of ANAS.

In advance, memory of martyrs who died for the independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was honored with a moment of silence.

At the event, chairman of the Division, academician Ismayil Hajiyev, said that the essence of the tragedy was widely reflected in the Order “On the 30th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy”, signed by President Ilham Aliyev on December 13, 2019. According to him, the tragedy of January 20 is one of the bloodiest events against the Azerbaijani people.

The scientist noted that during the events of bloody January, inscribed in history as a tragic and heroic page of our modern history, Heydar Aliyev, putting his life in danger, came to the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan in Moscow, strongly condemned the Soviet leadership for the massacre that was perpetrated in Baku. It was noted that after the national leader returned to power in 1993, these events received a full political and legal assessment. By a special decree of the Milli Majlis of January 20, 1994, January 20 was declared National Mourning Day.

Then, scientific lectures on “National leader Heydar Aliyev and the legal and political assessment of the tragedy of January 20”, “Socio-political situation in Azerbaijan on the eve of January 20” and “The tragedy of January 20 - a crime against humanity” were listened.
