ANAS celebrates International Mother Language Day

ANAS celebrates International Mother Language Day

Institute of Linguistics of ANAS named after Nasimi has organized a scientific conference dedicated to the International Mother Language Day - February 21.

The director of the institute, academician Mohsun Naghisoylu, having provided detailed information on the history of this significant day, said that four people were killed in protest against the ban on the Bengali language in Pakistan in 1952 and in deference to their memory, UNESCO declared February 21, 1999 International Day native language.

Noting that the language is a symbol of the wealth and self-awareness of the nation, M. Naghisoylu said that in the Middle Ages, the Persian language was perceived as the language of poetry, Arabic as the language of science, and Turkic as colloquial. The director noted that in the era of the Safavids empire in the 16th century, the Azerbaijani language rose to the level of the state language and began to be widely used as a native language. He said that this initiative was continued during the period of the Azerbaijan People Republic, and by a decision of June 27, 1918, our mother tongue was declared the state language.

Mentioning the words of the national leader Heydar Aliyev: “A people becomes a people, and a nation becomes a nation thanks to its native language,” the scientist emphasized the exceptional merit of the great leader in preserving the power of our native language during the USSR. He said that on the 50th anniversary of Baku State University in 1969, the national leader as a high-ranking person on a USSR scale spoke his native language, not Russian, and on his initiative in the Constitution of the Azerbaijan SSR, adopted in 1978, the Azerbaijani language was given the status of the state language. M. Naghisoylu noted that article 21 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, developed under the guidance of national leader Heydar Aliyev, defined the Azerbaijani language as the state language, including the Law on the State Language in the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted on September 30, 2002.

Speaking about the constant concern of President Ilham Aliyev for the mother tongue, the scientist noted the orders “On the implementation of mass publications in the Azerbaijani language with Latin graphics” and “On the State Program on the use of the Azerbaijani language in the context of globalization in accordance with the requirements of the time and the development of linguistics” in the country ”,“ On a number of measures to ensure wider use of the Azerbaijani language in the electronic space ”and“ On measures to protect the purity of the Azerbaijani language and the distance further improving the use of the state language.”

Noting that today there are more than 200 countries and 70 official state languages in the world, M. Naghisoylu touched on the importance of preserving the purity of the native language and passing it on to future generations.

In their speeches, professors Buludkhan Khalilov and Adil Babayev noted that the Azerbaijani language is one of the most developed and richest languages in the world, and emphasized the importance of protecting our language from foreign elements.

Then lectures “Let us glorify our native Azerbaijani language in the world”, “Poetic opportunities of the Azerbaijani language” and “Mother tongue - our spiritual wealth” were listened.
