British scientist conducted paleological research in Nakhchivan

The head Department of Education and International Relations of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS, PhD in History Safar Ashurov, employees of the department F. Aliyev and I. Nahmatova were on a scientific trip to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The purpose of the visit was to conduct a scientific analysis of animal bones revealed during excavations in the settlement of Machta I in 2009-2015 by an archeology specialist from the UK, a researcher from the London Archaeological Institute, Gwendolyn Maurer.

On the first day of the trip, the chairman of the Nakhchivan Division, academician Ismayil Hajiyev and the head department of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography, corresponding member of ANAS Veli Bakhshaliyev provided information about the archaeological excavations in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Further, a survey was made of the monuments of Nakhchivantepe and Kultepe I located on the territory of Nakhchivan, the tombs of Momina Khatun and Yusif ibn Kuseir and the locality of the ancient city of Nakhchivan, G. Maurer was provided with information about the Nakhchivan architectural school.

In the following days, the Institute’s staff and an English researcher visited the monuments of Kultepe II, Oghlangala, Ovchulartepesi, Gizgala, and Makhta I. The expedition leaders informed G. Maurer about the features of the Makhta I settlement. Having examined the artifacts, the expert drew the discovered animal bones to preliminary studies.
