Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry of ANAS has hosted a jubilee meeting dedicated to the 120th anniversary of world-famous scientist, Honored Scientist, academician Habib Shakhtakhtinsky.

Opening the event, ANAS Vice-President, Director of the Institute, academician Dilgam Tagiyev said that although the anniversary meeting of the Scientific Council on the 120th anniversary of prominent scientist Habib Shakhtakhtinsky was planned to be held on a larger scale, at the national level, the current quarantine regime rules did not allow it, it was decided to hold the meeting with a limited number of scientists.

Academician D.Taghiyev spoke about the research of chemist H.Shahtakhtinsky on the study and complex development of mineral resources of Azerbaijan, which is one of the main directions of his scientific activity. He said that the scientist's research on the processing of mineral resources of Azerbaijan is as large as the chemistry and technology of processing of major mineral raw materials - alunite, Filizchay polymetallic ore, Dashkesan iron ore, titanium sea sand, barite, rock salt, dolomite, rare, scattered, ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

"One of the important problems of academician Habib Shakhtakhtinsky is the extraction of elemental sulfur from sulfur gases obtained in the non-ferrous metallurgy industry and included in the waste gases," said Tagiyev. He noted that the scientific basis for the reduction of oxide with conversion gas at low temperatures has been developed.

It was noted that the results of H. Shakhtakhtinsky's scientific work were summarized in 7 monographs and textbooks, 400 scientific articles, author's certificates and scientific reports. Under his leadership, more than 40 doctors of philosophy and sciences, thousands of engineers-technologists, chemists, teachers and scientists were trained.

Academician D. Tagiyev said that the scientific activity of the prominent scientist was highly appreciated. He was awarded the title of "Honored Scientist", the "October Revolution" order, the medal "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945", the "Honorary Decree" of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR.

The director of the institute added that academician H.Shahtakhtinski received the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry in 1940, Doctor of Sciences in Chemistry in 1949, and Professor in 1950. In 1967 he was elected an active member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. In 1937-1959, he worked as the head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry at the Azerbaijan Institute of Petroleum and Chemistry named after M. Azizbayov. Until the end of his life, H. Shakhtakhtinski headed the "Minerals Technology" laboratory, which was established on his own initiative in 1959 at the Institute of Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (now the Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry named after M. Nagiyev).

Finally, professors Arif Efendi and Ikhtiyar Bakhtiyarli, Ph.D. Vagif Gasimov and others shared their memories of the scientist.
