Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS expands foreign relations in sphere of researches of mud volcanoes

ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG) expands overseas communication, exchange of information and experience in the field of researches of mud volcanoes.

Contracts on scientific cooperation between the management of institute and foreign research institutions are signed, as well as work carried out within the framework of grant projects and obtained important results. Research is conducted under the supervision of the head of the Department of mud volcanism IGG, doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences, Professor Adil Aliyev.

So, the comparative analysis of geological and geochemical features of Azerbaijan volcanoes mud and Ukraine is carried out, obtained new information. For the first time in the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan were carried out mineralization work. This area of researches in IGG is formed as the new scientific direction.

Sulfate mirabilite, thenardite and gypsum, as well as their calcium-magnesium-ferociousness varieties are mainly represented in volcanoes of Shamakhi-Gobustan region, in particular Demirchi, K.Maraza, and Shihzarli. Research is conducted in collaboration with the Department of Marine Geology and Sedimentary Ore Formation of the National Academy of Sciences in Ukraine within the framework of the project “Comparative study of mud volcanoes in the Azov-Black Sea and Caucasus regions.”

Works of the Ukrainian scientists are performed under the leadership of the manager of office, the academician Yevgeny Shnyukov. Five-year project will completed in 2017.

Also together with Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the project on the subject “Modern Geodynamics, Fluid Mode and Oil-and-gas Content of the Caucasian Region” is realized.

The isotope and geochemical analysis of the samples of gas and water taken from more than 40 mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan was carried out, results are compared to geochemical indicators of the fluids which are taken out by mud volcanoes of the Tamansky peninsula and Georgia. Two main types of waters are allocated: sodium bicarbonate, and calcium chloride. Depth of formation of waters is estimated in the range from 1.0 to 6-7.5 km.

The opinion is confirmed that the happening processes are connected with sedimentary thickness and low (40-1200) temperature, concerning oil and gas fields and mud volcanoes. In volcanic outbursts also examples of breeds from exposures of Maikop, combustible slates and pyrites are studied. Results of researches found the reflection in scientific articles. The five-year project is going to end this year.

For the first time with the support of Science Fund of SOCAR “Atlas of mud volcanoes of world” has been prepared for publication. In the atlas compiled and analyzed materials on mud volcanoes of 42 countries located in the Alpine-Himalayan and Pacific tectonic zones, as well as in the deep areas of the Caspian, Black and Mediterranean seas.

Adil Aliyev notes that in the Globe more than 2500 mud volcanoes are revealed, 350 from them are located in Azerbaijan. For the first time all volcanoes considered in the atlas are subdivided into two genetic types – mud volcanoes and mud-volcanic manifestations.

These data are received as a result of the translation more than 600 scientific publications in which are reflected the results of researches of the mud volcanoes in whole world.

The 450 color drawings are given in the atlas – cards and various schemes, 340 photos, including space and aerial photographs and 136 tables. The atlas is made in Azerbaijani, Russian and English languages, each of which consists of 320 pages. Besides, on 68 pages the explanatory note is prepared for the atlas. The atlas is planned to publish in Italy.
