Final stage of "Republican Olympiad in Informatics among university students"

The 2nd final stage of the Republican Olympiad in Informatics, which co-organized as a joint initiative of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies, Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Ministry of Education has come to an end. The activity is held among university students at the ANAS Institute of Information Technology and sponsored by the “Azerfon” and “BestComp Group” companies.

The Deputy Minister of Communication and High Technologies Elmir Valizadeh announced that 12 teams from 4 universities are competing in the final.                                                                                     

According to the decision made by the panel of judges headed by the captain of Azerbaijani team, an associate professor at the Baku State University Ramin Mahmudzadeh, 9 more teams have been invited from the outside to take part in the final. This move was taken due to the active participation of regional teams at the first stage of the competition.

E.Valizadeh noted that 45 teams from 15 universities of the country participated at the first stage of the Olympiad, which was held on April 15 at Gafgaz University. According to results of the first stage, 12 teams from 4 universities reached the final, which is the most difficult stage of the Olympiad.

The Director of the Information Technology Institute Rasim Alguliyev believes that the activities carried out in order to properly represent Azerbaijan in these competitions play significant role in the upbringing of the young generation.

“Such activities help to select talented young people for representing our country in international competitions”. During the completion each team must fulfill 9 tasks for 5 hours. This time, unlike previous Olympic competitions, examination and assessment of the fulfilled tasks isn’t   held by a panel of judges. They are carried out by a special program called the Automatic Assessment System.

Teams must write task solutions in “Free Pascal”,”Borland C++” or “Borland Pascal” programming languages and send them to the server for checking. The system checks solutions and informs contesters whether they are right or wrong by sends results to contesters’ computers.

According to results of the first stage, 12 teams from 4 higher educational establishments acquired right to participate in the final. The final stage, took place at the Institute of Information Technologies, team “Gafgaz Programmers’ from Gafgaz University took first place, team “Norbert” from Baku State University took second place, “Baku Gafgaz U4” and “Baku Gafgaz U7” teams from Gafgaz University took  third and fourth places respectively.
