Republican scientific seminar on medical geology held

Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS hosted the republican scientific-practical seminar on "Medical Geology: state-of-the-art and challenges".

At the event was listened the report co-prepared by the head department of Gamma Spectrometry of the Institute of Geological environment, corresponding member of ANAS Chinghiz Aliyev and the young researcher Farah Mahmudova devoted to researches of radon and its influence to live organisms.

Presenting the report, F.Mahmudova informed that the development of medical geology is of strategic importance for Azerbaijan.

One of the main goals for research in this area is the zoning of the country's radiation, geochemical and ecological features.

One of the main directions of medical geology in Azerbaijan is studying the problem of radon influence and disintegration its products on a human body.

In 2010, the grant project of Switzerland Scientific fund was realized by the staff of Institute of Geology and Geophysics.

Based on these results were compiled distribution maps of radon in Azerbaijan.

At present, in areas where are abnormal parameters of radon, ANAS together with the Ministry of Health carry out processing of the received and statistics for communications between a high concentration of radon and lung cancers.

As a continuation of these studies in 2014 was evaluated radon concentration in the thermal waters of the Talish region.

As a result of researches was revealed dependence between concentration of radon and gas composition of water.

According to the health and safety standards, except for the water source Buludul (Yardimli), usage of thermal water in the region does not threaten the health of the population.

The amount of radon in drinking water source of Buludul 1.5 times exceeds permitted norm.

In addition, by the order of Cabinet of Ministers dated on July 31, 2014 was approved the "Programme of activities in the exploration and reduction of the risk of radon in Azerbaijan Republic for 2014-2018".

The main goal of the Action program is preparation of proposals on the organization of system of the state control for prevention of exposure of the population to ionizing radiation as a result of radon influence, and also to reduction of the existing risk of radon.

In Action Program is provided carrying out of pilot tests on the preparation of the program of scientific research aimed at identifying risk areas of radon, medical examination of people living in areas at risk of radon for a long time, public awareness of the threat of radon, etc.

The report aroused a great interest on participants.

In closing, were discussed research results.
