Expedition group of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography conducted archaeological research in the territory of Ganja

At the end of May by the expedition group of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography were conducted archaeological researches of prospecting character in the territory of Ganja.

Leaders of expeditions working in Ganja-Gazakh region and also young researchers who have a certain practice of archaeological research in the region were included to a research group.

The purpose of the expedition led by the chief of department of the institute Farhad Guliyev was electronic registration of archaeological monuments of Ganja and cartographical work.

Archaeological researches were covering the territory in 300 sq.km. By means of the “Google Earth” program the territory of the city was investigated, archaeological monuments were brought by GPS coordinates.

The new archaeological monuments which are generally found in the city are tumulus type. The expedition to the territory of the Ganja airport to the cemetery "Yeni Sabzikar", as well as the entrance to the city up to the administrative boundaries of Goygol territory was discovered and registered on the map the 62 tumulus.

The tumuli as it is supposed belong to a bronze age and are generally covered with stones of various sizes.

States, territory localization, size of mounds were included to the list.

According to members of the expedition, in the future it is necessary to carry out large-scale excavations.

The expedition members also visited located region monument “Seherburnu” on the territory of Samukh that is one of the largest towns in the territory of the South Caucasus.

The expedition members also met with the chairman of the Ganja branch of ANAS, academician Fuad Aliyev and with the head of Ganja Executive Power Elmar Valiyev, exchanged views on the intensification of archaeological research and protection of historical monuments in the region, expressed appreciation for the support of research.
