Azerbaijan scientists participated in an annual meeting of the gene banks in the world

Director of the Institute of Genetic Resources, corresponding member of ANAS Zeynal Akbarov and Deputy Director for scientific affairs, PhD in biology Mehradzh Abbasov were for scientific mission in Turkey on 18-23 October 2015.

At the annual meeting of gene banks of the world and meeting of international projects for wild ancestors of cultivated plants, which held by the organizational support of the Global Trust Fund on Plant Genetic Resources, International Advisory Group for Agricultural Research and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew delivered the report “Resources of genetic plant of Azerbaijan and management".

At the event was widely discussed further activity of gene banks and stressed the need for a comprehensive assessment of plant genetic resources, the creation of the private collections and genotipization by means of a molecular marker and sequential technologies.

At the International Institute of Researches of Rice (IRRI), International Center of Improvement of Corn and Wheat (ICICW) and International Center of Potatoes (ICP) were delivered the reports on a genotipization of samples of gene banks by method of a marker and a sequence, the full genomic analysis of the selected plants.

Including the employees of the U.S Cornell and California State University delivered the scientific reports on the conducted basic researches in the field of a genome.

During discussions was noted that, the researchers conducted at the level of a genome along with full informing on samples of gene banks will also accelerate work on creation of fruitful and steady grades and make the contribution to ensuring world food security.

Note that, at the event were highly appreciated the beginning a few years ago of researches in this direction in Azerbaijan, in particular creation of the sequences of new generation and department of "Biotechnology" and "Virology" laboratories equipped by additional modern equipment and also preparation of young highly qualified personnel here. Within participation of scientists of research institutes and universities of the U.S, Italy and Turkey, including Trust-Fund, ICARDA and CIMMYT were discussed questions in connection with carrying out researches and strengthening of cooperation along with use of marker technologies and sequences of new generation.
