The expanded meeting of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences of (ANAS), was held to discuss research priorities put forward by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the General Meeting held on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of ANAS. The event was articulated around the President Ilham Aliyev's ideas "On the integrated study of the demographic situation in the country from the perspective of socio-economic development," by the Director of the Institute of Geography of ANAS, Academician Ramiz Mammadov.

In advance, Ramiz Mammadov thanked to President Ilham Aliyev for the fact that he appreciated the work of scientists of the Institute of Geography. The scientist added that one employee was awarded the title "Honored Worker of Science," another one "Honored Worker of Culture", three ones - a medal "Tereggi."

Academician noted that one of the issues raised by President Ilham Aliyev at the anniversary event was the issue of population growth and demographic development. He stated that, in 1990, the growth of population in Azerbaijan amounted to 19-20 people every thousand inhabitant, the scientist said that in the mid 90s, this number was reduced to 7-8 people. He noted that after the approval of the "State Program on development of demography and the population of the Azerbaijan Republic"by Head of State in 2004, due to improve the social situation and the policy of a stable natural increase of the population had risen to 13-14 people per thousand habitants. Ramiz Mammadov stressed that today annual population growth in the country is 1.2%, which many times higher than in neighboring Georgia and Armenia. Ramiz Mammadov said that the Institute planned to establish the Department of Human Geography, in which structure will operate the lab "Demographic development and geography of human settlement ' "Socio-Economic and Political Geography", "Geography and scientific basis of tourism development" . He highlighted the development of tourism is one of the important tasks affected by President Ilham Aliyev during his speech. Number of people employed in the tourism sector is large, but along with this, to the Academy of Sciences was charged task of detection and investigation of scientific problems of the industry.

Academician noted that the planning department will carry out its activities in several important directions. Accommodation of the population in the economic and administrative center of various natural and geographic areas, natural and anthropogenic factors of development, infrastructure issues of demographic development and resettlement - roads, railways, schools, hospitals, post offices, providing people with drinking water and water for agriculture, power, climate, soil and relief coverage, creation of new jobs due to the demographic development, the impact of natural and economic factors on the resettlement of people - all of these issues will be studied in the department.

Speaking about the problem of the crisis of the demographic potential of Absheron, the scientist stressed the need to address on this question. Solving problems related to the development of small and medium-sized cities, which are the administrative district centers, the creation of these cities, new jobs will help prevent the flows of population on the Absheron Peninsula.

Currently, the share of the working age population is 71.8%. Noting this, Ramiz Mammadov added that in this sense, there was a very serious disparity in the age composition of the population. He stressed that in the next 10-15 years the number of people of retirement age and their share in the total population will increase by several times, it can become a serious problem for the population growth and ensure the country's labor force.
