Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

An expanded meeting of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), to discuss research priorities put forward by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the General Meeting held on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of ANAS was held. Declaring the event open, the President of ANAS, Academician Akif Alizadeh introduced the issues on the agenda. First of all, the head of ANAS thanked the President on behalf of Azerbaijani scientists, the Academy and the entire scientific community for his great concern for the domestic science. Then, Academician Akif Alizadeh made with an extensive report on the scientific priorities put forward by President Ilham Aliyev at the General Meeting.

Academician Akif Alizadeh noted that in his speech at the anniversary event of ANAS, on November 9 this year, which was a significant event in the cultural life of the republic, President Ilham Aliyev announced the priorities of the national science, due to socio-economic, cultural and spiritual development of the republic. The academician said that the head of state has set national science such important tasks as conducting basic and applied research in order to prepare a new economic model of the country, including the strengthening of the non-oil sector and increase its export capacity, coordination of the demographic situation in the country with the prospects of socio-economic development republic and conduct comprehensive research in this area, the active participation of science in the development of the industry. ANAS President said that, at the General Meeting President Ilham Aliyev put the task in front of all scientific fields - from technical and ending with the humanities and social sciences.

Academician Akif Alizadeh stressed that special attention should be paid to the development of space science, strengthening the defense power of the state, the development of military industry, oil and gas and non-oil sectors, which requires domestic scientists’ serious scientific research in these spheres. He noted that the recent increase in cases of terrorism attacks, the spread of terrorism, which we are seeing negative global events taking place in our country and abroad, have put before Azerbaijan science important task - to investigate the scientific and theoretical basis of the concept of multiculturalism. With the purpose of informing the world community on the truth of Azerbaijan, fighting against false materials about our history by hostile forces, it been recommended expanding further researches at the Institute of History. The head of state put before the historians an important task –to write books, monographs, and other scholarly works, reflecting the period of independence with the goal to mark the 25th anniversary of the state independence of Azerbaijan.

Speaking about the activities undertaken at the Academy for the past two years, Academician Akif Alizadeh told about successful implementation of structural reforms, a number of issues for the implementation of various government programs, expanding interscience relations and research, the establishment of international laboratories, the formation of the international image of the national science, organization of ANAS training on the steps of the Judiciary, the integration of science in Azerbaijan into the world, creating the basic departments and application of innovative technologies. Meanwhile, the president of the Academy emphasized that scientists should always keep its focus issues such as the selection of research topics, the use of the inventions of scientists in entrepreneurial projects, the creation of a separate department for the coordination of research with business and thus the expansion of related activities, the use of scientific results in the industry.

Then Academician voiced the thoughts and suggestions by President Ilham Aliyev at the anniversary event, and stressed the need to engage the relevant ministries to projects and studies carried out in ANAS, cooperation and, thus, provide scientific justification of the projects and all work performed.
