Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

The president of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli met with the Nobel Prize laureate, honorary member of ANAS, Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina, prominent scientist Aziz Sancar.

At first, outstanding scientist Aziz Sancar got acquainted with the building of the Presidium of ANAS and visited the ANAS- TÜBİTAK Coordination Center and wrote his heartfelt words in the Memory Book of the center.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli expressed his gratitude to the guest for accepting the invitation and visiting our country. He noted that Nobel Prize laureate Aziz Sancar was elected an honorary member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences at the General Meeting of ANAS held on November 29, 2023. An honorary member diploma and a certificate of ANAS will be presented to the prominent scientist and wide discussions with the scientific community of the Azerbaijan Republic will be held during his visit.

The academician Isa Habibbeyli said that currently Azerbaijan had stepped into a new stage of its development under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev and underlined that the National Academy of Sciences was in a stage of renewal according to the processes going on in our country. The academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that significant steps were taken for the creation of the “Electronic Academy”, as well as important research was carried out on Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies. He also highlighted the cooperation with TÜBİTAK in this direction.

The president of ANAS said that the visit of Aziz Sancar to our country would be another contribution to the development of scientific relations in the Turkic World. He also proposed the realization of the “Turkic World Aziz Sancar Doctoral Scholarship”.

During the meeting, Nobel Prize laureate Professor Aziz Sancar expressed his gratitude to the leadership of ANAS for his election as an honorary member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences at the General Meeting of ANAS and invitation to Azerbaijan. The scientist said that he had always been pleased with the visits to Azerbaijan and expressed his confidence that the next discussions with the scientific community of Azerbaijan would be fruitful.

Afterward, the gifts of ANAS were presented to Nobel Prize laureate Aziz Sancar.

It should be mentioned that the visit of Aziz Sancar will last till June, 6. The outstanding scientist will report on the theme “Turkic world science policy: realities and challenges” at the special meeting of ANAS and will be presented with an honorary member diploma and a certificate of ANAS. The scientist Aziz Sancar will also visit the Nakhchivan Division of ANAS, its scientific institutions and organizations as well as the higher educational institutions of the republic.
