On November 4, a scientific conference titled “Solidarity for a Green World - COP29 Challenges and the Tasks of Humanitarian Science” was organized jointly by the Presidium of ANAS, the Division of Humanitarian Sciences and the Division of Social Sciences of ANAS.
The event was attended by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, members of the Presidium of ANAS, advisors of ANAS, representatives of scientific institutions and organizations of ANAS, and other relevant persons.
Opening the conference with an introductory speech, the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized that the “Green World Solidarity Year” is continuing successfully in our country and Azerbaijan is preparing for the world-wide international COP29 conference at a high level. He pointed out that numerous events concerning the “Green World Solidarity Year” and the upcoming COP29, are organized at ANAS by the Academy’s Division of Biological and Medical Sciences, Division of Physical, Mathematical and Technical Sciences, Division of Chemical Sciences and Division of Earth Sciences as well as books and articles are published and our scientists are making appearances on television programs.
“Today, by organizing this scientific conference dedicated to the “Green World Solidarity Year” and COP29 we conclude the events in this direction at the Academy. After COP29, we plan to hold a comprehensive summary event on the challenges of the international conference and the scientific tasks. Around 80,000 guests are expected to attend COP29. This conference stands at the pinnacle of international events and shows a high reputation of President Ilham Aliyev. Azerbaijani people are confident that, under the President’s leadership and his purposeful efforts, COP29 will be held at a high level, bringing great prestige to Azerbaijan. Through COP29, we will unite calls related to science, which will be among the priorities of our future directions”-said Academician Isa Habibbeyli.
The head of ANAS mentioned that extensive discussions on scientific issues will also take place within the framework of COP29, noting that ANAS will be represented in the conference at a high level. Several meetings will be held at the Academy with foreign scientists visiting our country. He pointed out that COP29 will also give a direction to the future development of our science.
Then, the Vice President of ANAS, Academician Irada Huseynova, provided detailed information about the events organized by Scientific Divisions of ANAS, as well as its scientific institutions and organizations, within the framework of the “Green World Solidarity Year” and COP-29.
It was noted that over the past period, approximately 50 international and republic scientific conferences, round tables, and seminars have been held with the direct organization and participation of ANAS. The Central Scientific Library has an ongoing annual book exhibition titled “Green World Solidarity Year”, which operates both virtually and traditionally.
Academician Irada Huseynova also touched upon the events held within the framework of “Green World Solidarity Year” and COP29 at the Nakhchivan and Ganja Divisions of ANAS, as well as at the Sheki and Lankaran Regional Scientific Centers.
Afterwards, the scientists from different institutes of ANAS delivered their reports at the conference.
The advisor of ANAS, Academician Adil Garibov said in his speech that due to scientific and technological progress, humanity’s demand for energy has increased, and the search for additional energy sources and their excessive use have led to global warming and climate change, resulting in a rise in carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Hosting such a prestigious event as COP29 in Azerbaijan holds symbolic significance. Academician Adil Garibov underlined that under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, our green world is protected and there are plans to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
The Academician highly praised the events held at ANAS within the framework of “Green World Solidarity Year” and COP29, underling that the scientists are working hard to address problems related to climate change.
In his concluding speech, Academician Isa Habibbeyli highly praised the reports heard at the scientific conference, underlining that the reporters introduced new approaches. The conference will play an important role in identifying the potential of the humanitarian and social sciences in addressing issues related to climate change. Unlike the exact and natural sciences, the humanitarian and social sciences have a significant role in communicating the problem of climate change to society, raising public awareness, and promoting this issue, and work in this direction will continue.
