On February 13, the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli met with the rector of the Suleyman Demirel University of Türkiye, Professor Mehmet Saltan.
During the meeting held at the Presidium of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that the deep-rooted friendship and brotherhood between Azerbaijan and Türkiye are irreplaceable and that significant steps are taken in all fields to further strengthen these ties.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli mentioned that the foundation of modern Azerbaijan-Türkiye relations is the word of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev: “One nation, two states”. He also pointed out the significant historical contributions of the 9th President of Türkiye, Suleyman Demirel in strengthening bilateral relations. The head of ANAS said that in the early 1990s, thanks to the friendship between the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev and Suleyman Demirel, the “Umid” Bridge over the Araz River was put into operation at the Azerbaijan-Türkiye border. This development ended the blockade of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and revitalized the economic life.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli stated that President Ilham Aliyev and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye continue the tradition of friendship of heads of state today and that these relations open up broad horizons for the development of all areas, including science. He pointed out that the National Academy of Sciences collaborates with leading institutions of Türkiye, such as Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History, the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA), and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), as well as more than 100 universities.
The Academician underlined that cooperation with the university named after Suleyman Demirel is an honor for the Academy and also informed the guests that the prominent politician was elected as an honorary member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in 1995.
The head of ANAS said that an event dedicated to Mehmet Akif Ersoy is planned to be held jointly by ANAS and Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University of Türkiye, and expressed his attitude towards the joining of Suleyman Demirel University with the event organizers.
The meeting also discussed the events planned for the 100th anniversary of the First Turkology Congress, which will be held in Baku in 2026.
The rector of the Suleyman Demirel University of Türkiye, Professor Mehmet Saltan provided information about the history of the higher educational institution located in Isparta and the scientific research conducted there. Expressing his satisfaction with the growing ties with the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Mehmet Saltan said that 328 Azerbaijani students are currently studying at the university, and there are also our countrymen among educators of the institution. The rector stated that the university has 14 faculties and broad opportunities for cooperation with ANAS in the field of research, through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, which encompasses 11 departments, including history, literature, archaeology, linguistics, and more.
Possible areas of cooperation were also discussed during the meeting and the necessity of exchanging scientific publications was also highlighted.
The meeting was also attended by Dr. Ibrahim Kubilay, Associate Professor and Coordinator of International Relations at Suleyman Demirel University, and Sevinj Aliyeva, Doctor of Philology and Head of the Department of Monitoring and Linguistics at the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of ANAS.
