Muhammed Emin Yıldızlı: “When I Saw the Caspian for the First Time, I Felt My Roots, and the Meaning of ‘One Nation, Two States’ Grew Even Stronger for Me”

On February 27, the ceremonial opening of the international scientific conference titled “Founders and Lessons of the First Turkological Congress: History and Modernity” was held in the Grand Hall of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS). Associate Professor Muhammed Emin Yıldızlı from the Institute of Turkological Studies at Istanbul University participated as a speaker. The scholar shared his impressions of the events held in Baku.

Muhammed Emin Yıldızlı, who was visiting Baku for the first time, expressed his admiration for both the city’s appearance and the warm, hospitable attitude of its people: “I must say that when I saw the Caspian Sea for the first time, I could not immediately understand whether the feeling I experienced was joy, excitement, or something else, but I felt my roots, and the meaning of ‘One Nation, Two States’ grew even stronger for me.”

The scholar, who mainly conducts research on the activities of the Turkic world diaspora, the Turkic language and language policy, as well as Turkic nationalism, presented a report at the conference titled “An Ethno-Symbolist Perspective on the Baku Turkological Congress”: “Of course, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences is an institution we know, but this is the first time we have come together around such an activity. The interest and special attention shown by my colleagues is very clear. Through you, I would like to once again thank the National Academy of Sciences.”

Sharing his views on expanding bilateral relations, Muhammed Emin Yıldızlı noted that relations between our countries have significantly developed, especially after the Karabakh war. He emphasized that the Victory achieved by Azerbaijan in the Patriotic War is a highly important and significant achievement that has resonated strongly within society. The scholar added that to further strengthen the emerging reality, diaspora organizations should develop joint action plans and direct more of their efforts in this direction.

Expressing his satisfaction with participating in the 100th-anniversary events of the First Turkological Congress, Muhammed Emin Yıldızlı expressed deep gratitude to the Yunus Emre Institute, ANAS, Khazar University, and other organizers for preparing a program worthy of the 1926 Congress: “The greatest significance of this event is that it increases the expectations and hopes of Turkologists regarding the future of the Turkic world. The program realized in Baku demonstrates that the unity of the Turkic world, based on scientific and political foundations, is already becoming a reality.”
