A monograph titled “Christianity in Caucasian Albania: Historical, Archaeological and Architectural Heritage,” dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), has been published by Natig Alishov, PhD in History and Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Antiquity and Albanian Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS.
According to Azertac, the scientific editors of the book are Corresponding Member of ANAS, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Ilyas Babayev, and Doctor of Historical Sciences Ramil Agayev, Head of the Atropatena–Albania History Department at the A.A. Bakikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology of ANAS. The reviewers are Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Tarikh Dostiyev, Head of the Department of Archaeology and Ethnography at Baku State University, and Associate Professor Yunis Nasibov, PhD in History, of the Department of Ancient and Medieval History of Azerbaijan at Baku State University.
The 340-page monograph examines religious beliefs and practices in Caucasian Albania prior to Christianity, the process of the spread of Christianity, and the religious and political situation in Caucasian Albania after the establishment of Islam. The book also discusses religious beliefs and practices in Caucasian Albania, the spread of Christianity, Christianity and Islam, cave temples, circular temples, chapels, semi-subterranean churches, cross-shaped churches, studied churches, recorded churches, trapezoidal churches, monasteries, funerary monuments, alphabetic and epigraphic monuments, examples of material culture, and elements of spiritual culture. In addition, the monograph includes comprehensive summaries of the work in Azerbaijani, English and Russian under the titles “Christianity in Caucasian Albania: History, Archaeology and Architectural Heritage” and “Христианство в Кавказской Албании: История, Археология и Архитектурное Наследие”.
The monograph is intended for specialists interested in the history, archaeology and architectural heritage of the Christian period of Caucasian Albania, as well as for architects, students and master’s degree candidates studying in this field, and a wider readership.
