Azerbaijani-Japanese international expedition conducted research in the cave Damjili

According to the memorandum, signed in 2015 between the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Aveydagh reserve, Ministry of Culture Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the University of Tokyo, since 2016 in a cave Damjili at the foot of Mount Aveydagh in the village Dashsalahli Gazakh region was conducted to study layers belonging to different stages of Stone Age. Azerbaijani-Japanese international expedition is conducted joint research in the territory in accordance with the provisions of the memorandum from 8 to 24 August of the current year. The expedition consisted of Japanese experts (surveyor, paleobiologist, palaeobotanist and others), led by Professor of Tokyo University, Head of the Department of Archaeology of the Stone Age, Dr. Yoshihiro Nishiaki and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography - PhD in History Mansur Mansurov and Azad Zeynalov, as well as Tovuz members of archaeological expedition, researchers of the Institute - Shahin Salimbeyov and Yagub Mammadov.

Some of the 12 exploration pits drilled in the framework of primary research, important results have been achieved. As a result, the upper layers have been identified pottery patterns and arrowheads related to the Middle Ages, and in the lower layers - tools of the early Neolithic. Below Neolithic layer under mute layer 50 cm thick in the depth of 3.5 meters have been found tools dating from the Middle Paleolithic. In order to determine the age of the historical specimens of fauna and coal will be shipped to the University of Tokyo. It was decided to continue the research in the next year.

Note that, still in 1953 in the territory of our republic with participation of archeologists M.M.Huseynov and S.N.Zamyat were carried out archaeological exploration in - Maraza, Gazakh, Agstafa, and cave Damjili was registered. Thus it was laid the foundation for the study of the Palaeolithic era in our country. It should be noted that in general it was discovered 30 sites of the Paleolithic era, 8 of which were found in a cave. In 1956-1957, supervised by M.Huseynov archaeological excavations were continued, over 7 thousand of guns and rubbles, as well as the remains of fauna were revealed in the cultural layers of cave Damjili. Mixed cultural layer did not allow defining the absolute age of the transient phases and periods.
