II Special Department held next seminar

Today, II Special Department of the Presidium held next seminar.

Seminar with participation of Civil Defense headquarters of the institute and organizations of ANAS and commander-in-chief of CD troops was opened by chief department Eldar Guliyev.

Chief department stated that, in connection with war condition in the country, seminar dealing with radiation and environmental problems in Azerbaijan is of great importance in terms of information in this field, take precautionary measures, and to prevent the effects of the hazard will occur.

Then, Deputy Director of Science at the Institute of Radiation Problems PhD in Physics-math Assoc. Prof. Revan Mehdiyeva made a presentation on “Nuclear security in the Republic of Azerbaijan”. She said that, since Azerbaijan is neighboring to countries with nuclear technology, it has the threat of nuclear and radiation exposure.

Talking about the danger emanating from Metsamor nuclear power plant of Armenia for the region, the scientist noted that Metsamor NPP is located in an active seismic-dangerous zone. In the event of an accident, radioactive contamination of the atmosphere, water and land of neighboring states, including Azerbaijan, will occur. It was reported that 42 tons of nuclear fuel is used annually in Metsamor NPP. Due to the location of the territory of Armenia in the Kura-Araz basin, any wastes emitted into the rivers flow into the Caspian Sea after a while. And this leads to contamination by radioactive wastes of the environment, covering vast territories.

R.Mehdiyeva spoke about the meaning of the call for "Metsamor Stop", stricken with the goal of closing the nuclear power plant. It was noted that already in connection with this problem the views of international experts from various countries were openly expressed.

Then at the event the head of the Laboratory of Radiobiology of the Institute of Radiation Problems, Doctor of Biological Sciences Alimkhan Jafarov delivered a report "Chernobyl tragedy and nuclear safety in the region", which describes the long-term contamination of groundwater in the territory, even 31 years after the tragedy.

It was said that 5 years after the tragedy, people had thyroid cancer, and 10 years later - leukemia, which led to a disruption of the functions of the spinal cord.

The scientist noted that, despite the demands of the European Union, the decision to prolong the life of the second unit until 2026 was made by Armenia and Russia in connection with the liquidation of the activities of the Metsamor nuclear power plant.

Then an exchange of views took place on the reports.

At the event, headquarter chiefs of CD also informed on the training sessions conducted by steering staff of CD in March.

In conclusion, a number of current issues were considered.
