Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

On April 24, at the joint organization of the Presidium of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Linguistics named after Nasimi ANAS, the international conference "Agamusa Akhundov and Azerbaijani Philology" dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Honored Worker of Science, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan, active member of ANAS, Professor Aghamusa Akhundov.

First of all, the participants of the event visited the grave of A.Akhundov at the Second Alley of Honor.

Then in the Main building of ANAS the guests got acquainted with an exhibition consisting of books reflecting the scientific creativity of the scientist.

At the event President of ANAS, Academician Akif Alizadeh spoke about the life and work of a prominent scientist. The head of the Academy noted that Aghamusa Akhundov is a classics of linguistic science, which, along with science, has been engaged in pedagogical activity since young years, and has brought up a large generation of scientists. Having said that A.Akhundov enjoyed great respect and authority in scientific circles, the academician stressed that he was not only a well-known scientist but also a prominent representative of the domestic intelligentsia.

The Vice-President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli spoke with the report "A word about Academician Aghamusa Akhundov", who noted that thanks to the research conducted by A.Akhundov, a linguistic school was formed in our country. He said that the scientist for the first time in the history of Azerbaijani science defended his thesis at the age of 32 and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philology: "This was a rare case not only in the history of Azerbaijani science, but also on the scale of the entire former Soviet Union. In fact, Aghamusa Akhundov said his word in science, ahead of time defending his Ph.D. thesis.

Isa Habibbayli noted that Aghamusa Akhundov proved for the first time that ancient participles and gerunds are the basis of the temporary forms existing in the Azerbaijani language. Having said that the scientist is the first researcher of mathematical linguistics in Azerbaijan, the academician added that the concept of "linguistic aesthetics" was introduced into domestic linguistics precisely by A. Akhundov.

The Vice-President of ANAS stressed that the literary activity of A.Akhundov is a new page in the traditional linguistic and literary science. The researches of the scientist are significant scientific works aimed at solving serious problems of the theory of literature and differing in their high theoretical level.

Isa Habibbeyli noted that Aghamusa Akhundov was the only scientist who conducted independent research in the field of studying the syllable as a phonetic unit and a rhythm unit: "His observations of the development of the syllable from the Azerbaijani poetry closed to open type can be called the theory of Agamusa Akhundov in verse. At the same time, the scientist introduced into our science a theoretical understanding of the two functions of the phenomenon of linguistic attraction-syntactic constructions and the possibilities of the artistic language. "

Academician stressed that the scientific and theoretical heritage of Agamusa Akhundov is a valuable and vivid example, perfectly reflecting humanitarian scientific knowledge in the country and abroad on its entire scale.

At the conference, the report of the Director of the Institute of Linguistics, corresponding member of ANAS Mohsun Nagisoylu on "Outstanding linguistic scientist, academician Agamusa Akhundov". M.Naghisoylu noted that Academician Agamusa Akhundov, who is considered to be a prominent representative of modern linguistics in Azerbaijan, played an important role in the development of linguistics in the country with his multifaceted work, and established his own scientific school.

M.Naghisoylu stressed that the authority of the scientist was great in his student years: "During his studies at the philological faculty of the Azerbaijan State University, A. Akhundov won the respect of teachers with his deep knowledge and intellect. In 1955, after completing his higher education with the Nizami scholarship, Aghamusa Akhundov enrolled in the graduate school of the university and defended his thesis on the subject "The category of the verb tense" six months ahead of schedule. And in 1964, at 32, he defended his doctoral thesis on "Phonemic system of the Azerbaijani language", thereby becoming the youngest doctor of science in the Soviet space in the field of philology.”

In 1990, Agamusa Akhundov was appointed director of the Institute of Linguistics and worked in this position for 22 years. Elected in 2001 as a corresponding member of ANAS, A.Akhundov at the same time was appointed Academician-Secretary of the Academy of Sciences organized at that time. Six years later he was elected an active member of ANAS, as well as a second time Academician-Secretary of his department.

Noting that the outstanding scientist is the author of 36 books, nearly 500 articles, M.Nagisoylu noted that his monograph "Phonetics of the Azerbaijani Language" was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The scientist added that prior to this work A.Akhundov also conducted consistent scientific research in the field of history and modern problems of phonetics, wrote monographs "The phoneme system of the Azerbaijani language" and "Historical phonetics of the Azerbaijani language".

The reporter said that the merits of A. Akhundov in the field of Azerbaijani linguistics were highly appreciated, and the scientist was awarded a number of honorary titles and awards both from the state and from authoritative organizations.

M.Naghisoylu noted that the memory of Academician Aghamusa Akhundov, who is considered one of the brightest representatives of Azerbaijani linguistics, has great merits in the development of philology, especially Turkic studies, will always live in the hearts of people.

Chairman of the Writers' Union of Azerbaijan Anar Rzayev, rector of the Baku State University, Academician Abel Maharramov, Director of the Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Professor Erden Kazhibekov, head of the department "Historical Ethnography" of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS, Academician Teymur Bunyatov, dean of the Faculty of Theology of BSU, Academician Vasim Mammadaliyev,Pprofessor at the University of Ain Shems Mohammed Haridi (Egypt), head of the Turkish Language and Literature Department at the University of Hajettepe Shukru Haluk Haluk Akalin (Turkey), who spoke about the scientific activities of Academician Aghamusa Akhundov and shared their memories of him. By means of a space bridge, foreign scientists shared their thoughts on A.Akhundov's work.

The first day of the event continued with sessions in the sections "Theory of Linguistics", "Phonetics", "Language and Style", "Questions of Literature and the Literary Language", "Actual Problems of Turkology", "History of Language and Grammar."

The conference will end on April 25.
