In 2017 there has been a decrease in the number of earthquakes in the territory of Azerbaijan

ANAS Division of Earth Sciences (DES) and the Republican Seismic Survey Center (RSSC) held a meeting on December 19.

At the meeting which held at RSSC, ANAS academician-secretary, academician Fakhraddin Gadirov acquainted the participants of the event with the issues on the agenda.

Then, Director of the RCSS, correspondent member of ANAS Gurban Etirmishli delivered a report on the results of scientific and scientific-organizational activities in 2017of the structure led by him.

The scientist noted that, scientific research conducted at the RSSC for the reporting period covered such areas as seismology, magnetometry, gravimetry, geodynamics and geochemistry. It was reported that, in the current year the seismic regime of the territory of the republic, the regularity in the distribution of epicenters of earthquakes, the dynamics of seismic processes in focal zones, the active parts of deep faults and the intensity of the strongest earthquakes in this territory were estimated. It was brought to the attention that anomalous predictive effects were revealed before earthquakes of magnitude 4.0.

The speaker said that, in comparison with 2016, in 2017, the number of earthquakes in the country has significantly decreased, and the amount of seismic energy allocated has increased. He noted that, in 2017, based on the data of 35 digital stations, studies were conducted, as a result of which 8934 tremors were registered. Director said that, the recorded earthquakes 3642 were local, 2087 - close, 3205 - distant. G.Etirmishli stressed that during the reporting period the strongest earthquake occurred on November 15 at 23:48:02 on the territory of Agdam magnitude 5.7 points.

The scientist also noted that, in recent years the southern part of the Kura lowland has been activated from the seismic point of view, and earthquakes occurred as a result of the collision and compression of the Lesser Caucasus and the Kura lowland.

G.Etirmishli also reported about the eruption in 2017 of Otmanbozdag, Shekikhan, Lokbatan and Keirekinsky mud volcanoes.

He brought to the attention that, 12 scientific articles of the RCSS staff (including 9 abroad) were published in 2017, 8 theses in scientific journals, including 2 in journals with the impact factor, on the scientific works of the scientific staff of the RCSS were 39 references are registered.

The report aroused great interest of the participants of the event, answers were given to the questions.

In conclusion, were discussed a number of current issues.
