"Archaeological Heritage of Azerbaijan" exhibition held in Sofia

The delegation led by the vice-president of ANAS, director of the Institute of Literature after Nizami Ganjavi, academician Isa Habibbayli visited Bulgaria.

During the visit, were held meetings at the institutes of Experimental Morphology, Pathology and Anthropology, Literature and the National Archaeological Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). Between the Institute of Literature of ANAS and the Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS and the National Archaeological Institute of BAS were signed cooperation agreements and were discussed prospects for cooperation.

At the same time, at the National Archaeological Institute of BAS, director of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, Professor Maisa Rahimova delivered a report on "Archaeological Research in Azerbaijan". The scientist informed about archaeological excavations conducted in our country, revealed rich samples of material culture, successes achieved in this field and projects implemented by the institute. Answers were given to the questions of Bulgarian specialists.

Within the framework of the visit, the photo exhibition on "Archaeological Heritage of Azerbaijan" was held in the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli, academician-secretary of the Department of Social Sciences of ANAS, academician Nargiz Akhundova, professor Maisa Ragimova, vice-president of the BAN Vasiliy Nikolov, director of the National Archaeological Institute of BAS Ludmil Vagalinsky, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other state and private structures of Bulgaria, mass media, heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Bulgaria, representatives of the Bulgaria-Azerbaijan Friendship Society.

At the opening ceremony, Azerbaijan Ambassador to Bulgaria Nargiz Gurbanova noted that, this year the 100th anniversary of the formation of the first democratic and parliamentary republic of the Muslim and Turkic world, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, is widely celebrated, and in connection with this, a series of events is held with the Bulgarian partners. This is evidenced by today's exhibition.

The Ambassador drew attention to the fact that the exhibition will give an opportunity to take a look at the archaeological excavations carried out in Azerbaijan, and the latest achievements in this field, as well as demonstrate the ancient history and rich cultural heritage of our country.

N.Gurbanova also spoke about Armenia's occupation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and its tragic consequences for the cultural and historical heritage of our country, as well as for people's lives. According to international law, acts directed against cultural property and historical heritage during armed conflicts are a war crime.

Stressing that, the exhibition is aimed at promoting the historical and cultural heritage of our country, the ambassador also said that, for Bulgarian specialists conditions for scientific and research cooperation with Azerbaijani colleagues have been created.

Director of the National Archaeological Institute of the BAS L.Vagalinsky brought to the attention that the exhibition created conditions for a deeper study of the history of Azerbaijan. Highly appreciating the agreement on cooperation signed between the two structures, the director expressed the hope that this way the legal basis for cooperation between these institutions will be laid, which in the future will be expanded.

At the event, the vice-president of the BAS V.Nikolov stressed that, cooperation between the two academies of sciences is developing in an increasing line. He reminded about last year's visit of the delegation headed by the President of ANAS, Academician Akif Alizadeh to Bulgaria, and noted that, the documents signed between the relevant institutions will become an example for other scientific institutions.

Speaking about the relations between the two countries, academician I.Habibbayli noted the great importance of propaganda of Azerbaijani science and culture in Bulgaria. Noting that, recently the cooperation between the academies has become much stronger, vice-president of ANAS expressed confidence in the continuation of activities in this direction. I.Habibbayli reported on signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Institute of Literature of ANAS and the Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

During the visit, academicians I.Habibbayli and N.Akhundov were interviewed by the influential Bulgarian radio station Focus. The scientists informed the audience about innovations in the Azerbaijani science and achievements in archeology.
