Young scientists commemorate the victims of the January 20 tragedy

In the Main building of ANAS, Council of Young Scientists and Specialists (CYSS) organized an event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.

In advance, event has began by a commemoration of blessed memory of the martyrs with a minute of silence.

Opening the ceremony, Ph.D. in physics, associate professor Famin Salmanov spoke about the role of the January 20 tragedy in the development of national identity, as well as the struggle of the Azerbaijani people for freedom and independence. He said that the Soviet leadership deployed troops in Baku to prevent Azerbaijan’s path to independence, killing 146 people, injuring 744 and arresting 841 people.

F. Salmanov recalled that on this night among the victims of the tragedy there were also prominent representatives of Russian science professors - Ibrahim Ibrahimov, Ismayil Mursagulov, Svetlana Mammadova, and scientists Idris Ahmadov and Parlag Mammadova were seriously injured.

The chairman of the council said that national leader Heydar Aliyev showed great courage and immediately went to the Azerbaijani mission in Moscow with his family and sharply criticized this bloody massacre. He said that it was on the initiative of the great leader of the tragedy that a political and legal assessment was given on January 20, 1994.

The speakers further shared their views on the causes and consequences of the January 20 tragedy.
