47th International Chemistry Olympiad in Azerbaijan for the first time

On July 21, opening ceremony of 47th International Chemistry Olympiad was taken place in Heydar Aliyev Center.

Opening ceremony of the Olympiad which organized by Baku Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University was attended by 292 individuals from 75 countries, more than 250 scientists, chemical experts, observers, guests and team leader, Azerbaijani state and government officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in the country.

In advance, video-slide on the Olympiad was displayed.

Opening the ceremony, president of the 47th International Chemistry Olympiad, Chancellor of Baku Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University, corresponding member of ANAS Professor Nargis Pashayeva greeted the attendees of Olympiad and expressed her gratitude of being the president of this important event. She noted that, Olympiad is held under the slogan of “Life even as a large chemical laboratory”.

Wishing successes to all participants, Nargis Pashayeva announced opening of 47th International Chemistry Olympiad.

Making speech in the event, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ismet Abasov brought to mind great care and attention to education, science and culture in the country by first lady of Azerbaijan, president of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva. Notifying Olympiad as an intellectual race among the youth in the history of Azerbaijan he wished successes to participants.

Dequan Li, chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Chemistry Olympiad, Professor for Chemical and scientific communications at Sejong University of the Republic of Korea, thanked to president of the 47th International Chemistry Olympiad, Chancellor of Baku Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Professor Nargis Pashayeva for excellent organization of the Olympiad.

Then, celebrate scientists of the world delivered their congratulations to Olympiad attendees. 

In a congratulatory letter Chancellor of Lomonosov Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy drew attention to the organization of the International Chemistry Olympiad of 3 times in the university chaired by him. "This year, Olympiad is held in a nice city Baku, capital of Azerbaijan for the first time. Our university is still an actively parts in this event. Therefore, Baku Branch of Moscow State University hosts of the event,” - said academician.

By video appeal Rudolph Arthur Marcus, Nobel Prize winner in chemistry for 1992, highlighted the International Chemistry Olympiad as a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with different cultures and gain more knowledge about chemistry.

Prof. Ahmad Zevayl, Nobel Prize winner in chemistry for 1999, expressed his gratitude on holding Olympiad in Azerbaijan. “International Chemistry Olympiad is a prestigious competition in order to celebrate beauty and richness of chemistry with the youth capable of brilliant edge. I hope you will discover Baku as a charming city and enjoy the hospitality of the people of Azerbaijan,” he stated.

Lotfi Zadeh, world renowned scientist, founder of the theory of fuzzy logic in the field of artificial intelligence, Professor of the University of California, also appealed to the students of this great knowledge competition. He stated that, Azerbaijan has strengthened its influence in the international arena, so conducting 47th International Chemistry Olympiad is a vital indicator of scientific, technological and cultural development and achievements made in the country under auspices of President Ilham Aliyev.

"It is not surprising to hold the Olympiad in Baku, because this is a fast-growing city cares for science and education", - appealed via video the professor at the University of Maryland, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Roald Sagdeev.

In the event, young tar performer Javanshir Rustambayli, People artist Azer Zeynalov, singer Agshin Abdullayev and others performed Azerbaijan music and songs.

In the 47th International Chemistry Olympiad which will run up to July 29, students will compete theoretical and practical knowledge in chemistry at Baku Branch of Moscow State University. Strengthening its scientific-educational base in recent years, this scientific venture established well-equipped chemical laboratories.

Decision on conducting 47th International Chemistry Olympiad in Azerbaijan, Baku Branch of Moscow State University, was adopted in Washington in 2012 by International jury of the 44th Olympiad. In 2014, at the closing ceremony of the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad in the Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi, flag of competition was given to Azerbaijan - organizer of the 47th Olympiad, Baku Branch of Moscow State University. After Russia, Azerbaijan is the second country in the CIS that won the right to host the International Chemistry Olympiad of students.

Currently, Azerbaijani team in the Olympiad include Dilgam Ahmadli, "Istek" lyceum graduate of this year, Sergei Styopin, this year graduate of lyceum after Academician Zarifa Aliyeva, Huseyn Babayev who finished "Istek" lyceum and Ruslan Mammadov, X class graduate of secondary school No. 160. Team head is a bronze medalist of 41th International Chemistry Olympiad in Great Britain (2009), researcher at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at the University of Gafgaz, Mehman Bunyadov.

Organizers of the 47th Olympiad are AR Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, State Oil Company (SOCAR) and Heydar Aliyev Center.
