2nd international scientific workshop “Mud volcanism and petroleum systems” kicked off

Main building of ANAS hosted for 2nd international scientific workshop “Mud volcanism and petroleum systems” co-organized by Institute of Oil and Gas of ANAS (IOG), Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (MSU) and Oslo University of Norway, on September 12.

The workshop is carried out within a trilateral agreement among Institute of Oil and Gas, MSU and University of Oslo.

The event brought together vice-president of ANAS, director of IOG academic Ibrahim Guliyev, deputy director on academic issues of IOG Vagif Gurbanov corresponding member of ANAS Dadash Huseynov, chief department of the institute corresponding member of ANAS Chingiz Aliyev, scientists researching in this field from Norway, Russia, Czech, Italy, Germany, the U.S. and our country.

The seminar was opened by the scientific secretary of the Institute of Oil and Gas, PhD in Earth Sciences, Shalale Huseynova, informed the participants about the agenda. She stressed out that, Azerbaijan is rich in mud volcanoes and that the workshop will boost the development of research in this area, including the recognition of the natural resources of our country in the world.

Later on, an employee of the university of Oslo, division of Earth sciences PhD Adriano Mazzini delivered a lecture on “Overview of mud volcanism”, an employee of the Moscow State University Grigorii Akhmanov on “Mud volcanism on the European margins and stratigraphic reconstruction from mud breccia”, a delegate from Italy National Research Council Luca Gasperini “Active faults, sea-level changes and mud volcanoes in the Gulf of Irmit (Sea of Marmara) and a chief department of ANAS Republican Seismological Survey Center, PhD in geology-mineralogy, associate professor Sabina Kazimova on “Seismicity in Azerbaijan and its influence on mud volcanoes”.

Note that, within the workshop to be run until September 16, excursions and field trainings will be organized to mud volcanoes – Dashgil, Goturdagh, and Akhtarma-Pashali.
