Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

The outstanding sculptor, People's Artist, laureate of the Orders "Sharaf" and "Istiglal", rector of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Arts, academician Omar Eldarov will celebrate the 90th on December 21.

Eldarov Omar Hasan oglu was born on December 21, 1927 in Derbent, the Republic of Dagestan of the Russian Federation. In 1942-1945 he was educated at the Department of Sculpture of the Azerbaijan School of Painting, in 1945-1951 the Faculty of Sculpture of the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture after I.Repin of the Russian Academy of Arts.

Since 1946, the prominent master is an active participant in various regional, international and republican exhibitions and competitions. Sculptures created by him, occupy a worthy place in many museums around the world. Among his works in the city of Baku are monuments to the outstanding Azerbaijani poet Muhammad Fuzuli, poet Natavan, poet-playwright Huseyn Javid, prominent ophthalmologist Zarifa Aliyeva, founder of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, famous engineer Nikola Tesla, maestro Niyazi, tombstones of the composer Uzeir Hajibeyli, artist Azim Azimzade, writer Suleiman Ragimov, academician Ziya Bunyadov, singer Rashid Beybutov, academician Hasan Aliyev, writer Yusif Samadoglu, and others.

At the same time, he is the author of a number of small volume works of a chamber character. Among them "Portrait of my daughter Lala", "Portrait of my son Muslim", "Motherhood", "4 Seasons", "Sisters", portraits-monuments to poet Nasiri Khosrof and writer Rabindranath Tagore, who were shown in various prestigious republican and international exhibitions. The memorial complex of the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev in the Alley of Honor and the monument in Kars of Turkey occupy a special place in the work of a prominent sculptor.

The monuments created by Omar Eldarov at a high level represent national art not only in Azerbaijan, but also in many countries of the world. It is the bust of Uzeyir Hajibeyli in the Donau-Auen Park in Vienna, the bust of "Broken Motherland" in the open air in South Korea, the busts of Ibn Sina and Sadraddin Aini in the Dushanbe.

Appointed in 1970 by the head of the Baku creative workshop for sculpture of the Academy of Arts of the USSR O.Eldarov made a great contribution to the training of highly skilled cadres in the field of fine arts. The famous sculptor has formed a professional school of painting and sculpture in our republic. The scientist, who occupies the post of rector of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Arts from 2000 to the present, as a teacher pays special attention to involving students and masters in professional skills and humanities.

Omar Eldarov is also an active participant in the social and cultural life of Azerbaijan. Having been elected a deputy of the Baku Council (1969-1973) and Milli Majlis of the independent Azerbaijan Republic (1995-2000), the scientist adequately coped with his work. He was elected a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR (1953), the Secretariat of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan (1956-1968), a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1967), an active member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1988), an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2007). Since 2001 - full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

The activity of academician Omar Eldarov is highly appreciated by the state. He was the laureate of the State Prizes of the USSR (1980) and the Republic of Azerbaijan (1982), was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor (1959), the Labor Red Banner (1986), Sharaf (2012), Istiglal (1997), The Heydar Aliyev Prize (2009). In 2014, having received the Star of Commonwealth-2014 award, for the merits in the development of Azerbaijani culture and monumental sculpture in the same year was awarded the Academician Uzeir Hajibeyli Prize of ANAS. In 2015, the torch of the European games held in the city of Baku was brought to the Heydar Aliyev Center by Omar Eldarov.
