“SEAB – 2015: Biodiversity in Eurasia” international symposium held

“SEAB – 2015: Biodiversity in Eurasia” international symposium held

ANAS Institute of Dendrology Mardakan hosted for "Eurasian Biodiversity" international symposium SEAB-2015) from June 1st to June 5th, 2015.

The symposium held by the organization of ANAS Institute of Dendrology, University of Pamukkale, Turkey, Belarusian State University, Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi Kazakh Institute of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, Committee of Science, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian State Agrarian University.

Akif Alizadeh  wished success to the symposium which takes place in our country for the first time and expressed confidence that the ideas, suggestions and recommendations that will be announced in the framework of this event will contribute to the protection of biodiversity, the restoration of ecological balance in Eurasia.

He said that, purpose of the event is to bring together the researchers and specialists, ecologists, civil society institutions, domestic and foreign social communities to discuss biodiversity of Eurasia.

It was noted that Eurasia is distinguished by its rich flora and fauna, characterized by a high degree of endemism. Conservation of biological diversity on this continent is of vital importance.

But in recent years, as a result of irrational use of natural resources have been degraded ecosystems, many species have been destroyed and their number has decreased dramatically. Informing that the solution to this problem is possible only through international cooperation, the President of ANAS noted that in this regard, the symposium is of great importance.

A.Alizadeh said that currently in Azerbaijan, which in terms of biodiversity is considered the richest country in the Caucasus, since 2003 the total area of natural areas has increased from 478,000 hectare to 1 million 132 thousand hectares. As a result, a network of nine national parks, 1 biosphere reserve, 11 nature reserves and 24 protected territories.

Noting that, the study and conservation of biodiversity in Azerbaijan identified as priorities, President of ANAS stressed that the systematic study of collection, protection and management of wild and cultivated plants in the country associated with the name of academician Jalal Aliyev. A. Alizadeh noted that exactly under the leadership of J. Aliyev the National program for genetic resources of plants was developed and created Azerbaijan gene bank of the vegetable.

Noting that current research in the field of biodiversity in our country is carried out mainly by the Department of Biological and Medical Sciences and by ANAS Department of Agrarian Sciences.

It was reported that, some ornamental sorts of plants were brought to Azerbaijan from different countries in recent years, naturalized in the flora of the country.

As a result of monitoring conducted by researchers were found more than 6,000 species. Moreover, after 24 year break, was re-issued a "Red Book" of Azerbaijan in 2013. "Flora of Azerbaijan" multi-volume is under construction.

Then rector of the Pamukkale University in Turkey, Professor Huseyin Bagci noted that the issues which will be discussed at the symposium will involve scientists to carry out successful research for the protection of biodiversity, and wished success to the symposium.

Director of the Institute of Dendrology, corresponding member of ANAS Tofig Mammadov said that as a result of irrational use of natural resources in Eurasia biodiversity is under threat, and stressed the importance of such workshops in order to recognize the scientific and practical achievements in the field of solving these problems.

Speaking at the event, professor of Sukhumi State University Todia Vaja, chairman of the Defense Council of the Batumi State University Rezo Hasanovic Djabnidze, professor of University of Pamukkale Ramazan Mammadov, employer of the Belarusian State University Anna Alexandrova and others, noted that the results of the symposium will play a positive role in further scientific research on biodiversity.

Within the event to be lasted till June 5, will be organized trips to museums, Central Park and the Dendrology Park and Botanical Garden.

It is planned to hold a symposium in Turkey, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia and other countries.
