Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

A meeting of the Presidium of ANAS dedicated to scientific cooperation between the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Hong Kong Core Academy of the People's Republic of China weld held.

The event was attended by president of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, members of the Presidium, department heads of the Presidium administration, directors of the scientific institutions and organizations, as well as Professor Li Lei, a member of the Executive Council of the Hong Kong Core Academy of the People’s Republic of China, Executive (Vice) Secretariat-General, Professor Raymond J. Wu and the Academy’s scientific staff members Feng Liu and Yan Zheng. 

Opening the meeting with a welcoming speech, Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that the strong foundations of Azerbaijan-China relations were laid during the official state visit of National Leader Heydar Aliyev to the People's Republic of China in 1994. He noted that President Ilham Aliyev also attaches great importance to the development of Azerbaijan-China relations, emphasizing that Azerbaijan supports China’s “One Belt, One Road” project and in turn, China supports  international transportation projects of Azerbaijan.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli underlined that scientific relations between Azerbaijan and China are also developing today, noting that ANAS closely cooperates with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Hebei Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing Foreign Studies University and Hebei Normal University. The head of the Academy said that ANAS is currently implementing a joint scientific project with Beijing Foreign Studies University, Hebei Normal University and Hebei Academy of Social Sciences on the topic “From the Caspian Sea to the Great Wall of China”. He mentioned that the first scientific conference on this matter was held in China in June of this year and the next international conference will be organized in our country in 2025.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli also mentioned that the “Azerbaijani Language” specialty is taught at Beijing Foreign Studies University and ANAS is providing the university with Azerbaijani-language scientific, literary, historical and other supplementary literature.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that the Center for Chinese Studies is currently operating at the Institute of Literature of ANAS named after Nizami Ganjavi and emphasized the significance of establishing an Azerbaijani Culture Center at the Hong Kong Core Academy. He also underlined that extensive scientific research on China is conducted at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of ANAS.

The head of ANAS emphasized that the visit of the scientists from the Hong Kong Core Academy to our country and the memorandum to be signed today will contribute to the development of Azerbaijan-China relations as well as scientific and cultural relations.  

Then, Professor Li Lei, a member of the Executive Council of the Hong Kong Core Academy of the People’s Republic of China expressed his deep gratitude to Academician Isa Habibbeyli for the warm hospitality. He noted that during their three-day visit, they were in many historical places and sites of Baku, witnessing the city’s beauty. Li Lei emphasized that they witnessed how significant the victory achieved in the 44-day Patriotic War is for the Azerbaijani people.

Saying that interstate relations also encompass the field of science the Chinese scientist assessed the visit of the delegation of the Core Academy to the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences today as a sign of bilateral scientific relations entering a new stage and the relations rising to the level of strategic partnership.

The Professor emphasized that the memorandum to be signed today will lead to the expansion of bilateral scientific cooperation: “Today, we toured the institutions of the Academy of Sciences and closely got acquainted with the conditions created there. We once again witnessed the existence of wide cooperation prospects. We can also think about establishing a joint laboratory or center for mutual exchange of knowledge and experience.”

Professor Li Lei stated that Chinese scientists are ready to cooperate not only in the field of humanities and social sciences but also to contribute to initiatives being implemented in Azerbaijan in the areas of renewable energy sources, "green energy," and so on.

In turn, Hong Kong Core Academy Executive (Vice) Secretariat-General, Professor Raymond J. Wu provided detailed information about the Core Academy. The professor said that multidisciplinary research is conducted at the Academy and their visit to our country opens new cooperation opportunities between ANAS and the Hong Kong Core Academy.

Subsequently, a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between ANAS and the Hong Kong Core Academy was signed. The document was signed by Academician Isa Habibbeyli and Professor Li Lei. The memorandum includes provisions for organizing joint scientific projects, research programs, conferences, symposiums, seminars, meetings, and the exchange of scientific personnel, publications, and works.

During the meeting, Academician Dilgam Taghiyev was presented with a diploma and a badge of an active member of the Core Academy. It should be noted that, by the decision of the Presidium of the Core Academy, Academician Isa Habibbeyli was also elected as an active member of this organization and he was presented with a diploma and a badge of an active member during his visit to China in June of this year.

At the end of the meeting of the Presidium, Academician Isa Habibbeyli presented the Honorary Certificate of ANAS to Academician Arif Hashimov for his services to the development of Azerbaijani science.
