ANAS Museum of Natural History  was founded in 1937 on the basis of the Natural Department of the State Museum.

The museum has two departments: Geology and Biology. At the main fund of the museum there are various exhibits. In the pavilions and showcases of the biological department, a part of the numerous exposition is exhibited, including skeletons and fragments of animal bones found during the expeditionary period and processed by researchers in different years.

Scientific studies of the Museum of Natural History have developed in several directions, mainly on paleontological objects. The main ones are: the study of the Binagadin Quaternary and Eldar Late Sarmatian hipparion fauna, the Pirekishkul higher vertebral fauna, numerous sites of the primitive people of the Azykh cave, etc.

The rich collection contains artifacts spanning several epochs — from coral polyps from the Poleoza epoch to the 45 thousand-year-old rhinoceros.

The collection of the Binagadin Quaternary includes 113 species of mammals, 112 species of birds, 2 reptiles, 1 amphibians, 120 insects, 22 species of plants. The Binagadin Quaternary locality is comparable only to the Rancho la Brea of the state of California in North America.

The Geology Department contains samples of ore and non-metallic minerals, minerals and rocks of Azerbaijan. Cobalt, gypsum, salt, quartz, pyrite, barite, molybdenum, calcite, etc. can be found among them. Building materials are also exhibited in the windows of the museum: marble, dolomite, marl, etc. The museum’s zoological department houses numerous exhibits of representatives of invertebrates and vertebrates.

One of the main goals of the museum is to acquaint schoolchildren, students, and intellectuals with the natural resources, flora and fauna of our country, to provide them with the protection of our material and moral resources, advising on environmental issues.
